Coffee has a reputation for staining teeth. Sticky foods are notorious for causing cavities. And popcorn kernels get lodged between teeth to cause other issues on a regular basis. But one food we don’t discuss too often as being harmful is soda.

There are several things that soda can do to your body, most of which are not good. Harming your teeth is one of the negative side effects. If you can avoid soda consumption or at least decrease how much you drink, your teeth will thank you, and so will the rest of your mouth and body, for that matter.

Eats away enamel
Tooth enamel is the hard, outer layer of your teeth. It protects your teeth – including the dentin and pulp, which constitute as the living part of your teeth – against infection, decay and death. Without enamel, your teeth would not be hard enough to do the work they are meant to do. Soda is highly acidic and eats away at your tooth enamel. By avoiding soda, you can keep your teeth strong and help them avoid cavities, sensitivity and other issues.

Stained teeth
One thing that Dr. Peter Gangi and our team often see from patients who come into Oneco Dental Care is stained teeth. One of the main causes of stained teeth is coffee. A close second, though, is from too much soda consumption. These soda stains are incredibly difficult to remove, and you may end up needing dental veneers to hide the stains and improve your smile.

At the end of the day, it’s okay to have a soda every now and then. However, you need to make sure that you monitor your soda intake to help your teeth stay healthy and strong. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with our dentist in Sarasota, Florida, call us today at 941-751-4900.
